Projects for 2011 and 2012

As a little girl I remember my mother sitting me down to watch 3 movies - Born Free, Living Free and Forever Free – the amazing story of Elsa the lioness, her cubs and Joy and George Adamson who dedicated their lives to conservation efforts in East Africa. Little did I know, that as an adult I would have the honor and pleasure to work in partnership with the Born Free Foundation (K). Throughout July Africa Expedition Support and the Born Free Foundation will be joining hands with local Masai communities and tour groups to build lion proof fences around Manyattas (local homesteads) to help protect the local livestock and livelihoods of the Masai people. We are proud to be part of this exciting initiative by the Born Free Foundation. www.bornfree.org.uk/about-us/born-free-kenya/community-projects/lion-proof-bomas

Rural Tanzanian Schools will benefit from several projects over the next couple of years. In July, Africa Expedition Support will be delivering over 300 text books to 2 primary and 1 secondary school. These schools currently have 2 sets of text books for the entire school; 95% of the students do not own or have access to text books to aid their studies. This is a huge gap desperately needing filling to promote and support education in rural areas. Africa Expedition Support is hoping to see this program extend to Kenya and Uganda in the future. Water is precious - we all know that. Harvesting water in low rainfall areas is essential – we all know that. Most schools in East Africa do not have clean running water for hand washing nor for drinking. Health and hygiene are paramount to a supportive learning environment. Gutters for Africa is a new exciting project looking to address issues around water catchment and harvesting safe water for local communities. Our aim is to ensure hundreds of schools and community buildings have guttering, water catchment and safe water storage for everyone to use. Africa Expedition Support specialise in the development of community service tours for school groups and youth groups - life changing experiences, unique opportunity to explore different cultures and give something valuable back to host communities. A few short weeks can change your whole perspective on life.

Over the years the team at Africa Expedition Support have worked tirelessly with several communities and local schools to seek out opportunities that benefit both the communities and visiting groups. Programs developed are more than just working in communities but provide opportunities to seek insight into local community and village life. A chance to make friends for life, developing special bonds overlooking cultural and economic barriers.

Africa Expedition Support personally approach Elders and school headmasters to identify areas of need within local areas; working together and collecting ideas for projects which are sustainable, achievable and economical. Overall we prefer to work with communities and local schools who would not normally have the opportunity to benefit from large projects currently in existence. Africa Expedition Support believes in working from community development models and practices.

We match group request, timeframe, and skills with local opportunities to ensure the best possible experience to maximize community development. A school group may have only a couple of weeks and want to blend community service, working with local school children, a few days on safari and maybe some beach time. Opportunities are endless.

Here is a list of opportunities successfully undertaken; building football field for a local high school in rural Tanzania; working with local primary schools in Masai Land to fight erosion, building and painting classrooms in local primary and secondary schools in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, digging irrigation trenches and wells, assisting teachers in class; learning Swahili and teaching English in local schools; spending time in traditional Masai Villages and participating in rituals; staying in local villages and feasting on local food; organizing fun runs and sports days, fencing schools and building teacher accommodation to name a few.

We also believe there should be time to play and develop itineraries which allow for white water rafting, a few days sunning on a tropical beach and game viewing in some of the Worlds most acclaimed parks for example.

School groups, youth groups and corporate organizations are catered for.
