Into Africa - The Jambo Jambo Run
The Jambo Jambo Run -made possible by Africa Expedition Support
- is a project for young people, focusing on self development
through sport and aims to help disadvantaged communities in
Africa in the process. It has been made possible thanks to the
support of.
In November 2005 six young people from around the British Isles
went on a two-week visit to Kenya and Uganda, with the purpose
of organising sports days and fun runs for local children.
Taking the helm
Knowing the task they faced, the group took charge. They communicated
and coordinated everything that needed to be done, and saw all
of the sporting events to a successful conclusion.
Organising the Fun Run
The main event organised by the group was a fun run for 3,000
children - that largest fun run Kenya has ever had. Held in
Eldoret, a town in Northern Kenya, the group enlisted the help
of the Keino family, a family that runs the local school and
orphanage.
As race day approached, the team collected all entries, commissioned
medals to present to everyone who crossed the finishing line,
and arranged for world athletes and record breakers that lived
locally to come along to the race and meet the children taking
part. A fulfilling outcome
From the experience they gained in Africa, four of the participants
found work on returning home. Several have even decided to work
abroad on similar projects.
