Time to make new friends on Safari and Beaches overland budget safari

Time to make new friends on Safari and Beaches overland budget safari

Bagamoyo was founded at the end of the 18th century and was the original capital of German East Africa; it was one of the most important trading posts along the East African coast.  The first settlers were Arab traders from Oman and Bagamoyo quickly became the main trading port for ivory and the slave trade. The name derives from the word Bwaga Moyo meaning “lay down your heart” in Swahili.

The town is full of historic buildings like the old German church, mission building, the German Boma (seat of the German colonial government), the museum, as well as various ancient Arab ruins.  It is also a very cute little fishing and beach town.  Famous European explorers like Burton, Speke and Stanley started their exploration trips through the African interior from Bagamoyo and David Livingstone’s body last resting place in Africa was here before being transported back to London.
