Budget African Holiday – Perfect for volunteers in Uganda!

Are you a volunteer in Uganda?  Looking for a safari budget African holiday experience before heading home?  This budget trip is aimed at those who a completing a volunteer in Uganda stint and want to see some of East Africa before heading home.  Starting in the Adventure capital of East Africa, Jinja we make our way through the Western highlands of Kenya to the working farm on Kenana near Nakuru.  We enjoy a farm tour and a visit to the Kenana Knitters project before continuing through Masai Land to the Masai Mara National Reserve.  We will be in awe as we meander our way through the African savannah of the Masai Mara in search of Africa wildlife.  We finish our short safari in Nairobi or we can continue and join the Safari and Beaches Budget Overland tour.  Of course this Budget African Holiday is open to everyone not just volunteers in Uganda!

Budget African Holiday

Day 1: Jinja

We meet the truck at the campsite in Jinja, and have a quick pre departure meeting before a free day to explore Jinja or head off and enjoy one of the many optional adventure activities!

Accommodation: camping (dorm/room upgrades usually available at an additional cost)
Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Optional Activities:
  • Grade 5 white water rafting on the longest river in the World
  • Bungee Jump over the Nile River
  • Quad bike and explore the equatorial bush and local villages along the banks of the Nile
  • Enjoy horse riding near the equator
  • Volunteer for a day helping out at a local school
  • Jump on a sunset cruise on the Nile River
  • Discover the source of the longest river in the world – the Nile
  • Hire a motor bike and explore the local markets of old Jinja town

Day 2: Kenana Farm

Heading back into Kenya we enjoy a picturesque drive to Kenana farm on the slopes of the Rift Valley and our overnight stop.

Accommodation: camping (room upgrades usually available at an additional cost)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Optional Activities:
  • Guided Farm walk
  • Visit local women’s empowerment knitting project

Day 3:  Masai Mara Game

Drive through traditional Masai land to the Masai Mara!

Accommodation: camping (room upgrades usually available at an additional cost)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: Masai Mara Game Driving

Today for those wanting to go on safari we spend the day in the World famous Masai Mara game reserve on safari.

The Masai Mara is a plethora of African wildlife, one of the best parks in the World to spot big Cats like lion, cheetah and leopard as well as many other animals like zebra, giraffe, elephant, warthog, and if we are really lucky Rhino!

Accommodation: camping (dorm/room upgrades usually available at an additional cost)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Optional Activities:
  • Full day safari game drive in the Masai Mara
  • Visit to a local traditional Masai village
  • Hot air ballooning over the Masai Mara

Day 5: Nairobi

Today we have a leisurely drive back to Nairobi.  Along the way we will stop at a lookout halfway up the Rift Valley escarpment for lunch and some last minute souvenir shopping.

Accommodation: camping (dorm/room upgrades usually available at an additional cost)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The trip officially ends 8pm on Day 5 however we have included camping that night for your convenience.

For those who wish to stay on longer in Nairobi can book additional dorm or room accommodation at the campsite and explore.  Here are some things you can do that are located nearby the campsite in the suburb of Karen on the outskirts of Nairobi.

  • Transport in a fully equipped overland safari truck, open sided for best game viewing
  • Inward facing seats so you can talk to each other instead of staring at your phones all day

  • Camping accommodation at well-equipped campsites (some have WiFi, most have bars, hot showers and flushing toilets)

What is not included?

  • Your flights. We don’t know where you come from and you will find a better deal on the internet than we could organise for you!
  • Your visas for Uganda and Kenya (most nationalities USD$100 for both countries under the East Africa tourist visa)
  • Airport transfers. You can book an Uber taxi or take a registered airport taxi this will be cheaper than any transfer we can arrange
  • Breakfast on day 1
  • Travel insurance
  • Bottled water and snacks

  • Pre and post trip accommodation (rooms/dorms are available at the campsite)

What to pack for this trip

  • As much humour and high spirits you can possibly carry!
  • Common sense
  • Sleeping mat (cheap one will do!)
  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow (inflatable is best) or you can buy a cheap one locally
  • Towel or if you have a travel towel
  • Personal toiletries (including sunscreen and mosquito repellent)
  • Clothes for hot weather
  • Clothes for cool weather – yes we are on the equator but we will stay at places at 6000ft altitude it can get cool at night (10C or 50F)
  • Insect repellent – herbal based products do not work, sorry African mosquitos only respond to DEET based repellent
  • Malaria prophylaxis – ask your doctor or travel clinic for advice
  • Bathing suit, cap/hat
  • Camera plus extra batteries and memory cards
  • Passport and Yellow Fever Certificate

Do yourself a favour and pack as light as possible.  Hard cases are not allowed as they do not fit in the luggage compartment of the truck – soft bags only
